In a multipurpose room designed for singing, dancing and community activities, sound clarity was an important part of the brief. Klar™ was approached to consider how acoustic treatment could be integrated into the interior, rather than treated as a separate addition.

Inspired by trees, the concept takes the form of acoustic panels arranged as pillars, extending from the walls towards the centre of the room.

The shape of the room presented its own challenge. It wasn’t a perfect circle, so each pillar had to be positioned at a different angle to point towards the centre. Detailed measurements and adjustments on site were needed to work out how the concept could fit the space.

Suspending the pillars from the ceiling brought another layer of consideration. Different materials and construction methods had to be explored to create a structure that was secure while maintaining the intended design. Through discussions and trial and error, the team worked through the details together.

“This was quite different from our usual projects. It’s about finding the right method for the structure to work without compromising the design.”

The Result at Marine Parade Community Space

Rather than being installed on a wall or ceiling, the acoustic panels become part of the space itself, creating a three-dimensional installation that brings together sound, structure and design.

For us, this project was an interesting exercise in finding the balance between how something needs to work and how it needs to look. It’s a different way of thinking about acoustic design, and one we enjoyed working through.
